Alpha Feto Protein (AFP), Serum

The AFP test measures levels of alpha-fetoprotein, a protein normally produced by the fetal liver. In adults, it is primarily used as a tumor marker for hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer) and germ cell tumors. Elevated AFP levels may indicate liver cancer or complications in pregnancy such as neural tube defects. Symptoms that motivate testing may include a palpable abdominal mass or signs of liver dysfunction.
